George Mateljan’s lifework is widely and well known. This world-famous expert for healthy diet has unselfishly presented his scientifically proved ideas about the healthiest foods and the ways of their preparing to all the people of the world. Every day millions of them read his books or visit his web-page whfoods.org, which has greatly improved their health and the quality of their life in general. Dear reader, we do hope you are one of those who can witness it.
A lot of useful information can be found both in his books and on his web-page; therefore it is not necessary to repeat what is there so beautifully written. We would rather mention some less familiar facts from his life, which are of utmost importance for his work. We will try to explain what inspired this great, open-hearted man to start his noble work – to travel round the world in search of the healthiest foods that will change life to many people. The answer was found where he least expected it: in the smells and tastes of his childhood,in his at the same time research-orientated and child-like spirit, in the tradition and beauties of his homeland – the place he has always kept in his heart and gladly returned to. George is heart and soul connected with his homeland.
He was born in Croatia, a small but exceptionally beautiful European country. To be more precise, in the southern, Mediterranean part of Croatia, named Dalmatia. Dalmatia is probably one of the most beautiful and pleasant places for life in the world. Especially the town of Split, in which George Mateljan was born. The town bursts with tremendous life energy, which was recognized as early as the 4th century by the Roman emperor Diocletian. On this spot he built his magnificent palace (summer residence), and later the town of Split developed on its foundations. He could have built it anywhere on the Mediterranean as the whole area was under the Roman power, but he was advised to build it just on the site of the present-day Split because of its specific life energy and healthful potential this area has. It is true not only of Split but of the whole of Dalmatia, because of the unique harmony of the sea, the sun, the fresh air and the clean unspoiled soil. Besides the food, many other health-related factors are ideally combined in this region. Nature seems to have merged all the best for Man at one place. The people who live here are happy, indeed.
That happiness was deeply imprinted in little George. The whole story really began in his mother’s kitchen. While still a five-year-old boy he used to watch wonderingly how skilful hands were making bread, baking cakes and preparing various delicious meals from the healthy vegetables picked in their garden. Probably even then he felt that it was the healthiest food in the world. The smells and tastes from his mother’s kitchen have always been with him and have become the landmark in his later research and work. He felt it especially after moving to America, when he faced the health problems caused by the bad effect of the high-caloric western diet. What he had then felt, vaguely deep inside, found its confirmation in the later scientific researches. Having travelled almost all of the world in search of the healthiest food, no wonder it brought him back to the place where everything started-to his homeland;to Dalmatia,to that small paradise-like garden in which health blossoms.
How well his mother knew all that while she was preparing tasty meals spiced with love and care, not even being aware of the shine of the wondering eyes watching her.
This is not the end of our story about George Mateljan, here is just its start. There are still many questions to be answered ; how to bring back to our menu the traditional Dalmatian ways of preparing food , how to raise awareness of the importance of the healthy way of life in this stressful and busy time of ours, as well as how to take responsibility for our own health. George Mateljan will certainly do his best to find some answers.
